Our Memberships

Sport Scientists Canada provides three types of memberships that entitle the sport scientist to a number of resources and professional development opportunities. Each membership is attributed a range of benefits in terms of resources and access to Sport Scientist Canada initiatives and events.

Professional Membership

Practitioners possessing a Bachelors, Masters or Doctoral degree in a field related to sport and exercises science who have current association or college registration (where applicable) and are practicing in the Canadian sport system providing service, guidance, or mentorship to a National Sport Organization (NSO), Canadian Sport Institute or Centre (COPSIN), Multi-sport Organization (MSO), Provincial/Territorial Sport Organization (PTSO) or University/College.

A verification letter is required with all professional membership applications. Please download the template provided and have your supervising colleague fill out and return back to you. The verification letter and your CV will be uploaded at the end of your application. For questions, please contact info.ssc@sportscientistcanada.ca.

Please note that the High Performance Certification is a separate process from membership application. For a member to become certified, sport scientists must meet a qualification standard for their respective scientific discipline and will need to successfully pass an evaluation of high performance competencies with a reviewer.

Student Membership

Students enrolled in either a university degree (Bachelors, Masters or Doctoral) or college diploma program in Canada, focused on the study of sport and exercise science. Enrolled in either a formal or informal internship within a National Sport Organization (NSO), Canadian Sport Institute or Centre (COPSIN) or multi-sport organization (MSO). Student members will need to reapply for membership yearly in September.

Affiliate Membership

Designed for Canadian sport administrators, coaches and applied researchers with an interest in the field of performance sciences, research and innovation. This membership is reserved for those working with Olympic, Paralympic and Next Gen athletes in Canada.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • Who should fill out my verification letter?

The verification letter should be completed by your supervisor. Examples could be your COPSIN director, NSO HPD, varsity athletics director, clinic director.

  • What if I do not have anyone to fill out my verification letter?

If you do not have anyone to verify your role and athlete pool you indicated in your application, please contact info.ssc@ownthepodium.org and indicate the rationale. Please note that SSC membership may not be appropriate for practitioners providing services in a clinic environment for athletes in a “one off” scenario. Practitioners should have a relationship with a National Sport Organization (NSO), Provincial/Territorial Sport Organization (PTSO) or the University/College that the athlete is associated with.

  • What if I worked with athletes previously but am not currently working with them?

In order to qualify for membership, you must be actively engaged with athletes and meet membership requirements.

  • Is there a cost to becoming a member?

No. The membership packages do not cost a fee. There are specific criteria that must be satisfied for each membership. An application must be submitted to be provided a membership.

  • How do I renew a membership?
    • The HP Certification will require a collection of professional development points.
    • The Professional membership requires an annual renewal.
    • The Student membership requires evidence of continuing study to process student membership renewal.
